Novell Positioned in the Leaders Quadrant for Security Information and Event Management

16 May 2006

Novell today announced it has been listed in the leaders quadrant of Gartner, Inc.'s, "Magic Quadrant for Security Information and Event Management, 1H06" by Mark Nicolett, Amrit Williams and Paul Proctor. In this May 2006 report, Gartner evaluated vendors based on their completeness of vision and ability to execute.

Following its recent acquisition of the security event management vendor, e-SecurityTM, Novell® will offer the e-Security product, SentinelTM, as a stand-alone security information and event management (SIEM) solution. Sentinel also complements the company's existing systems, security and identity management offerings. With the addition of Sentinel, Novell will deliver a robust security and compliance solution that reduces cost and complexity, and gives customers a single-view of network and application events across their enterprise.

In the July 2005 report titled "Security and Identity Management Auditing Converge," Gartner notes that, while SIEM and identity and access management have required different information security approaches to date, compliance efforts are now driving organizations to “integrate (them) at their respective functional layers for auditing.” In addition the report notes, “there are synergies to be realized in the way auditing works together and, hence, opportunities to save time, money and effort."

“We believe this recognition from Gartner reflects Novell's move to aggressively position itself in the security and compliance management market,” said Jeff Jaffe, executive vice president and chief technology officer for Novell. “Sentinel offers real-time monitoring, response and reporting of security information, access management and events to help customers confidently address regulatory requirements and security concerns with one reliable audit and compliance monitoring solution.”

The positioning of vendors in Gartner's Security Information and Event Management Magic Quadrant is based on several criteria including the vendor's overall ability to execute and completeness of vision. Vendors are positioned in either the Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries or Niche Players quadrant. Gartner defines Leaders as those who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market directions and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.
